Let's say a company has 55,000 meters of SL-ETAC-00 2 (a plastic film) in
inventory and an order for 200 images of AD-BLD 305100-00 (a loaf of bread
wrapper). The challenge begins because four grades of SL-ETAC-00 2 exist.
Each grade has a different clarity. Accounting doesn't want to count four
inventory items when they could count just one and Engineering doesn't have
the resources to handle the BOM "explosion" that would result
by having four items of this common material across hundreds of different
shipped items, so only one inventory item exists. Customer Service, however, has a golden opportunity for a new national account, so customer service "has to" agree to a stringent customer specification demanding high clarity. The customer also requires that their order come from the same lot of raw material. Fortunately, production is unable to splice the material due to the manufacturing process, however a recent memo cautioning against high scrap means that only lots of raw material that will be almost wholly consumed should be used. In a word, that 55,000 meters of SL-ETAC-00 2 in inventory doesn't mean much. Production doesn't have time for fancy reporting if they're going to meet production schedules.
Bluntly put, Accounting, Customer Service, Engineering and Production often see things differently. Lay in some paying customer requirements and the Quality folks have a serious dilemma.
ProntoQCS solution
is at hand. Layered over of your existing manufacturing software, ProntoQCS
will keep track of specific component material qualities. Properties such
as size, clarity, attenuation, purity or any number of measurable qualities
will create a configuration. ProntoQCS tracks this configuration by lot,
by serial number or by both. ProntoQCS may track this intermittently or
continuously. When a specific order is placed,
the component material that matches the needed configuration can be quickly
and easily identified, located, allocated to the job and confirmed as
loaded on your production equipment. Thus,
accounting will have one item in inventory while Customer Service can
promise to meet customer specifications. Production needn't guess about
location or material. Engineering won't have to work late.
Solution: Inventory IS equal, sometimes.
